Dean E. Findley was born April 3, 1925, in the Villisca, Iowa area. He moved to Loveland, Colorado, in 1938. Dean joined the U.S. Navy while still a senior in high school on March
24, 1943; he was only 17 years old.
He was honorably discharged from the Navy February 4, 1946, (one month short of 3 years) from the
U.S.S. Brown, a Fletcher Class Destroyer, assigned to the South Pacific Theater
during WW II.
He was highly decorated for his services against Japan and had many campaign ribbons and numerous battle stars.
After the war Dean married Shirley Renz on December 25, 1947, and together they had 3 children:
Two sons and a daughter. Dean was a brick mason for 45 years in the Loveland area and was
also the financial secretary for the local Mason Union for 30 of those years.
Dean Passed away in Loveland, Colorado, on October 20, 1993.
This true story would not have been possible had he not kept a daily diary of his
accounts during his tenure in the Navy. This then, is truly..."The Life of a Tin Can Sailor" in very difficult times.
